Sweden Leads the World in Electric Aviation as Skellefteå Airport Reaches 8,000 Electric Flights

Sweden has emerged as one of the world’s leading countries in electric aviation, with Skellefteå Airport at the very forefront of this transformation. As of October 2025, more than 8,000 take-offs and landings with electric aircraft have been recorded at the northern Swedish airport — making Skellefteå, Västerbotten, and Sweden among the most active hubs for electric flight globally.

The journey began in August 2021, when Västerbotten County Governor Helene Hellmark Knutsson inaugurated one of the world’s most powerful charging infrastructures for electric aircraft at Skellefteå Airport. The facility enables rapid charging for multiple electric planes simultaneously and provides the necessary capacity for the growing field of electric aviation.

This early investment laid the foundation for the Green Flight Academy, which offers one of the world’s most sustainable pilot training programs. The academy’s mission is to train the next generation of pilots in an environmentally responsible way, using fully electric aircraft and renewable energy sources.

Skellefteå is the right place for the future of sustainable aviation. We have a proactive airport, renewable energy production from Skellefteå Kraft, and strong research collaborations with national universities. Together with Green Flight Academy, these strengths give us outstanding conditions for growth and innovation.

Robert Lindberg, CEO of Skellefteå Airport.

As global transportation transitions toward electrification, aviation stands at the threshold of major change. The combination of electric aircraft and drone technology opens up new opportunities for sustainable mobility — enhancing accessibility for communities, businesses, and individuals alike.

In line with this vision, Skellefteå has launched the Arctic Aviation Hub, a regional initiative focused on accelerating the commercialization of sustainable flight technologies. The program aims to support the development of electric aircraft, hydrogen propulsion systems, and advanced drone solutions, driving continued innovation in northern Sweden.

With the Arctic Aviation Hub, we’re taking the next step. Our goal is to make northern Sweden a world-leading center for sustainable aviation — where ideas take off and the future of flight is shaped.

Robert Lindberg, CEO of Skellefteå Airport.
